CASSINA GARDEN CLUB
Cassina Garden Club St. Simons Island, Georgia
Founded in 1928, Cassina Garden Club is the oldest garden club in Glynn County, Georgia. Headquartered in two circa early 1800s slave cabins, formerly a part of the Hamilton Plantation, Cassina Garden Club has been the guardian of these historical treasures since they were granted stewardship by the Glynn County Commissioners in 1932 and then deeded the property in 1950. Through Cassina’s efforts, the slave cabins were placed on the National Registry of Historic Places in 1988.
To support the cabins, Cassina holds two annual fundraisers each year, the Christmas Bake Sale and the spring Tabby & Tillandsia Garden Walk. We also raise funds through the sale of our cookbook, Coastal Cookery, and other cabin products. Cassina recently completed a historically correct restoration of the cabins to their original structures. To help pay for this, we relied on community donations, grants, and 100% participation of our membership, which currently numbers over 130.
In addition, over the years Cassina has sponsored many civic and beautification projects including establishing the St. Simons Island Public Library (1937); leading efforts to designate St. Simons Island as a Bird Sanctuary (1995); creating and assisting with the Ft. Frederica Herb Garden (2012); establishing and maintaining the Pink Garden at Hospice of the Golden Isles (2011); a Butterfly Way Station garden was created by a Gold Star Girl Scout (2017) on the Cassina property. We also donate to other local non-profits.
