ROXBURY BANDSHELL
Roxbury Bandshell - Roxbury park in Johnstown PA
The Roxbury Bandshell built 1939 at Roxbury park in Johnstown PA, born in the great depression, built as a tribute to the strength of the Johnstown people.
The historic Roxbury Bandshell located in Roxbury Park in Johnstown, PA, was built between 1937 and 1939 and dedicated during a week-long musical celebration in June 1939. The Roxbury Bandshell is the last of approximately 27 bandshells built in the United States under President Roosevelt’s Works Progress Administration (WPA).
In 2005, the City of Johnstown announced plans to demolish the Bandshell to make room for a parking lot; however, after a court battle with a number of city residents, the City reconsidered its decision the following year, and entered into a long term agreement allowing the Roxbury Bandshell Preservation to operate the Bandshell. Today, the City of Johnstown and the Alliance are strong partners in supporting the on-going preservation and operation of this historic treasure.
The Bandshell is alive and well in the 21st Century hosting a free weekly summer concert series every Sunday from 5:00 to 7:00 PM sponsored by AmeriServ Financial Bank which features local along with national acts, as well as a host of other events during the year.
